Opportunities in Ethiopia for Volunteers

Ethiopia is a country in the horn of Africa and the oldest independent country on the continent. There are historians who think that this might have been the beginning place of mankind due to fossils found there.  Its natural beauty, high mountains, lakes, waterfalls and historic buildings also make it a great place to visit for explorers.

Aside from trekking, bird watching, rafting on the Omo River, wildlife viewing and visiting native tribes there are tons of volunteering opportunities available. I have found three interesting options:

During the school year from September until the end of June, volunteers have the opportunity to teach in the local school. You also get to design and implement fun and educational activities for children living within our project homes. The only requirements are being over 18 years old, speaking English and to be able to commit for at least four weeks.

Volta Aid Foundation – Non Government Organization in Ghana

VAF is a non government organization that was founded in 2010 and is based in Ghana. They don’t just focus in one aspect of the life of locals. There are programs that involve education, health, micro financing and other that are targeted to community development.

This organization is not part of any religious affiliation or political association. This means that to finance their programs they take donations and take volunteers.

Volunteering is a way of helping people that are less fortunate that you, and to learn about other cultures, including the ones of your co-workers. What makes this organization great for volunteers is that there are no established dates.

The main requirements for volunteers are: a big heart, patience, commitment and fluency in English.

Non Government Organization

These are the volunteer programs that this non government organization is involved in:

Teaching – Volunteers interested in teaching are assigned at local schools to teach different subjects.
Village Preschool Teaching – There is a lack of these in the Volta region of Ghana. By doing this volunteers give the kids a chance to start learning from an early age.
Orphanage Caring – There are many health conditions that leave kids orphan in Africa. These kids are in clear disadvantage from the kids that do have a family. This is why there are volunteers needed for cooking, cleaning, teaching and to give them some love.
Microfinance – This non government organization had managed to get a solid micro finance plan. Volunteers are needed for assessing potential beneficiaries, providing training, among others. For this they do require that you have business studies.
Medical Help – In countries like Ghana the healthcare system isn’t very effective. You can volunteer at a clinic in Ho, and help make it better. To volunteer at the clinic you will need some kind of medical education.
First Aid Workshops – There are volunteers that will also be asked to teach small groups of locals about first aid. This is a very important task. You might be helping to save a life.
Diabetes Ward Placement – You will be sent to the diabetes ward of the hospital in Ho to help the only two nurses available with over 60 patients per day. For this you will need some basic medical education.

They Even have Custom Programs – All you need to do is contact them and let them know about how you think you can help. There have been cases when personalizes programs have been made. Are you an artist? Do you want to build something? Do you have a special skill that might help people of the Volta region?

The fees they charge include:

  • Accommodation with a local family
  • 3 meals a day
  • Airport pickup and transfer
  • A contribution to the program you choose

1 Month: $450
2 Months: $800
3 Months: $1150
4 Months: $1500
5 Months: $1850
6 Months: $2200

NOTE: If you want to stay less or more time they can arrange it for you too. Also if you have special needs, or a special diet let them know, they will do what they can to make things work for you.
